Your Favorite Fantasy RPGS (Outside of D&D and D20)?

Postby Havard » Thu Nov 30, 2017 7:41 pm

I've been thinking about this again. What RPGs do you like to play in the fantasy genre that aren't D&D or in the d20 family?

I think my list is:

Savage Worlds
Barbarians of Lemuria
RuneQuest -- maybe, but I would prefer to tweak the system a little.

I can't say I play many non-D&D fantasy games.
Those I like I tend to cannibalise for D&D -- e.g., Warhammer and Shadow of the Demon Lord. I do play Dragon Age (mostly because it's easy to run one-shots) and Rolemaster (my friends are fond of it). I've also played GURPS Discworld.

Of these, I'd probably try either SotDL or WFRPG if I were to change.

Outside medieval fantasy, I'm a huge fan of urban/modern fantasy -- mostly Witchcraft RPG, but also Shadowrun.

That is a tough one. I mostly play Sci-Fi/Modern when not playing D&D.

In no particular order:

Earthdawn - It was my wife's introduction to tabletop RPGs, and is the one system she's run besides 3.5/PF.
BESM - Designed to cover all anime genres, so works well for non-anime settings, too.
GURPS - I haven't played in ages, but would love to give 4th Ed. a try.
Fantasy AGE - I'm just starting to get into it, but learning it will greatly increase my ability to do more work for Green Ronin.

I don't even have time these days to play D&D but I'd be interested in trying any of the following games.

Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea
Gamma World (my own idea for a fantasy/sci-fi mashup)
Engines & Empires
Iron Kingdoms d20

My favorite is 13th Age. Shadow of the Demon Lord is a lot of twisted fun, too. Both use a d20 for task resolution, but vary pretty significantly from D&D, so I'm not sure if they count for the purposes of your question.

Fantasy Age, Gods of the Fall (Cypher), Capharnaum, Monsters & Magic, and Trudvang Chronicles are others that are worth taking a look at.

That's a tough one. I've played a small amount of Warhammer Fantasy, in the past, but I would rather play D&D.

I forgot to mention MiniSix which we did use in a very successful fantasy campaign. I was a player in that campaign though, but I have DMed other variants of the D6 RPG in the past (but not straight fantasy).

Sooner or later I have to try it... it is fairly similar to AFF in the sense that both use d6 mechanics and are quick and simple, leaving more room to roleplayers and less for rules lawyers.

I downloaded it. Its currently free on RPGNow. I want to compare it with Barbarians of Lemuria.
