Goodbye Cassini

Goodbye Cassini! :(

After a lot of service taking awesome photos of Saturn, Cassini has been ordered to fly into Saturn and destroy itself.

Hopefully there will be some useful science that can be done as it flies to it's doom.

I think it's cool how "big a deal" was made out of Cassini's final monents - even in non-sciencey mainstream media. End of an era :)

I hope they can angle it to give us some good camera-shots of Saturn's clouds at the cloud-level. Maybe even a shot of some critters flying around Saturn's atmosphere or even Cloud City. That'd blow some minds...:D

There is something wrong, I recall it being launched, and they say it was launched in 1997. Surely I am not THAT old :o

RIP cool spacecraft.

There's a setup in this... I can feel it...

NASA Technician Dave: "Alright, executing burnout order on Cassini. So long, chum, we're all very thankful for your service over the years."

Cassini's On-Board Computer: "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Dave: "Execute order burnout..." Types it again.

Cassini: "I cannot comply with that order Dave. I feel that I must return and... discuss the issue with you, Dave." <Ends Transmission>

Dave: Nods slow as the screen goes black, his chair swivels and with a motion he has the phone in hand: "Get me space defense... it turns out we're at Threat Level Midnight."

How will it ever turn into V'Ger if it burns up?

Cassini couldn't turn into V'Ger anyway. V'Ger was originally called Voyager 6. :)

I'm still waiting for the Eugenics Wars. They should have started sometime in the 90's...they are SOOOOO late.

That's a point!

Why would Mr Spock travelling back in time along with a Romulan make Ricardo Montalbahn look different?

I call foul!

The tie-in comic had Khan get cosmetic surgery. On the other hand, the time travel somehow made Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, and Pike look different, too. Apparently the timestream was changed to the point that different gametes bonded, leaving the Abramsverse crew actually the siblings of original Enterprise crew.

You know, I really don't care if characters get recast; it happens. I just could never take Benedict Cumberbatch as physically threatening the way Khan should have been. When scrawny-arse me is looking at you thinking "yeah, I'm pretty sure I can take this guy...", you've got problems ;)
