1. They tried coming up with a definition of dinosaur (I think fairly recently) - it was based on a common ancestor and everything was working well until they noticed that it excluded sauropods (the giants of the land). They had to change their ancestor definition a lot to get it to work iirc.

2. Most people now know that dinosaurs were feathered and people ask this question about pterosaurs - but pterosaurs are not dinosaurs!

ha so pterosaurs are scaley?

Thanks all

This is something that's been bugging me for a while and is wondering if anybody knows

How do paleontologists determine which creature is in which ecosystem?

Like if I do temperate hills in the Jurassic, which dinosaurs are native to that region?

Lots of clues. Any fossil plants (including pollen and seeds) at the same strata of rock? What other animal fossils are there? What types of rock it’s found in and how those sedimentary rocks form. Where on the prehistoric globe was the bit of land the dinosaur was found in millions of years ago, plate techtonics etc.

GURPS Dinosaurs and other Prehistoric Creatures was written by an Australian Paleontologisy Stephen Dedman and contains a a forward by the famous palaeontologist Jack Horner. Jack was a technical advisor for all the Jurassic Park films. The Character in the film ‘Alan Grant’ is modelled after Jack.

I believe it is closer to furry - it's not mammal fur, but they appear to be fovered in fine filaments.
