New Star Wars Trilogy starts in 2022

Post by Havard » Tue May 07, 2019 8:29 pm

New Star Wars and Avatar movies are coming every Christmas until 2027

Apart from a break in 2020, the holidays will be dominated by Avatar and Star Wars sequels for almost a decade.

Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker may be the end of the current Star Wars saga, but the Force will be back in your festive season again soon -- and for a long while to come.

Announcing an adjusted release schedule for the next few years, Disney has confirmed an as-yet untitled trio of Star Wars films will be released every other year starting in December 2022. We don't know if these are the Star Wars films reportedly being developed by Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, or the apparently separate stories from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

The updated Disney calendar now incorporates films produced by Fox, the movie studio Disney bought in March. Fox is producing four sequels to James's Cameron's Avatar, which have been pushed back from their original release dates to alternate each Christmas with the new Star Wars flicks.

n 2020, before the Avatar and Star Wars sagas begin again, Disney will still be in theaters at Christmas thanks to 101 Dalmatians reboot Cruella and Steven Spielberg's West Side Story remake.

Disney also announced new and adjusted release dates for various Marvel films, live action reboots and other productions. Among the changes to the Marvel-related lineup, the planned Gambit movie is finally dead while troubled X-Men flick New Mutants is delayed yet again to March 2020.

The Christmas schedule looks like this:

2019: Star Wars Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker
2020: Cruella and West Side Story
2021: Avatar 2
2022: Star Wars movie
2023: Avatar 3
2024: Star Wars movie
2025: Avatar 4
2026: Star Wars movie
2027: Avatar 5

I'm still hoping for an Obi Wan Kenobi trilogy with Ewan McGregor. :)

I understood that they had stated that all future Star Wars moveies will be stand-alone - no new series.

So, we may get one (or more) Obi Wan Kenobi movies with Ewan, but there will not be a new trilogy starting in 2022...

They have gone back and forth on this. There was a statement that they were taking a break from stand alone movies after Solo: A Star Wars Story.

While we have dates for 3 new movies after Ep9, I agree that its not a sure thing we're talking about a trilogy. We'll just have to wait and see untill an official statement about that is released I suppose :)

I heard that there will be a new Star Wars trilogy focusing on a part of the galaxy that we have not yet seen, so I am very interested in seeing that.

EDIT: Someone on Facebook has confirmed that this is the direction the new trilogy is going in.

I am also quite keen on a series of movies (trilogy or otherwise) focusing on the origin of the Jedi & Sith.

Not sure how I feel about yet another SW trilogy... I prefer stand alone movies like Rogue One and Solo. A Calrissian movie would be great. Donald Glover is perfect for the part. Too bad Disney has put a hold on these.

Someone on Facebook clarified for me that the new Star Wars trilogy will not be Episode X, but will be showing us a section of the Star Wars galaxy that we've never seen before.

Not sure who your friend is Angel, but I think this is just speculation. We don't know much yet.

I'm not ruling out a Calrissian movie with Donald Glover either, but I think Lucasfilm needed to take a breath and evaluate their strategy. Internet Trolls have their own ideas about all of this, but I think the real issue was that both Rogue One and Solo switched directors midway and had to reshoot large chunks of their movies. Clearly there are better ways to go about maximizing your profit.

Wow, so many Avatar sequels. I haven't even seen the first one yet. Is there enough material there to drive a series?

Given how controversial (to put it mildly) GoT writers have become after what they did in season 8, many people, me included, are very worried about them writing Star Wars (see https://www.change.org/p/the-walt-disne ... wars-films). I was not thrilled with the last trilogy and I expect the next one to be much worse..
