How much Lankhmar content is in Deities & Demigods?

Post by Big Mac » Tue Oct 04, 2016 12:38 pm

How much Lankhmar content is there in Deities & Demigods?

I've got Legends & Lore which is mostly the same book. So I'm not sure it would be worth getting Deities & Demigods just for one set of gods. Is this content replicated in another Lankhar book?

Try to get the Deities & Demigods that includes Melnibone and Cthulhu also.

The Nehwon material is duplicated elsewhere but not in precisely the same form.

I own Deities & Demigods Cyclopedia and Legends & Lore, but not any other Lankmar books. I just compared those two very quickly, but it looks like L&L updates everything in D&DC to 2nd edition except for: a brief mention of snow witches; Aarth, Spider God, and Votishal (demigods); Newhon Earth God and Rat God (lesser gods); and leviathan (monster).

Oh. There is more than one? Do you know they have different ISBNs?

PRE-POST EDIT: Hmm. According to The Acaeum, it looks like there were 8 1e printings of this, under the names Deities & Demigods and Legends & Lore. I thought Legends & Lore was only a 2e thing.

Thanks for that. It sounds like the Melnibone and Cthulhu stuff is the bigger deciding point on getting a copy of Deities & Demigods. And I'll have to be careful to buy the right version.

Hang on. Are you saying it has Lankhmar stuff in my 2e book?

<we interrupt this post while Big Mac goes to his D&D shelves />

Hmm. It's there! And I've got pencil notes in the contents section too!

I guess I don't have to buy Deities & Demigods for this.

I have a copy of D&DC that includes the Cthulhu Mythos and Melnibone chapters, which I acquired many years after I stopped playing 1e. So I have very rarely ever used it as an actual reference book, and have tons of better reference material for Mythos matters in particular, but for a Lovecraft and Erol Otus fan like me, it's a real gem.

The first and second printings have the Mythos and Melnibone. They can be told apart because the second printing has a page thanking Chaosium for letting them use the two settings, the first printing does not (and the third printing on excluded those two settings). I have a second printing of Deities that I found in a used bookstore 3 or 4 years ago.

Thanks for your help.

If I do go for a copy of Deities & Demigods I'll go for one of those two printings, just in case I want that stuff.

I'd forgotten about that. :)
