Stardock (mountain)

Post by Big Mac » Tue Jul 31, 2018 12:41 pm

Over in this post, Vestcoat said that the Stardock from the Forgotten Realms adventure Undermountain: Stardock had it's name stolen from Lankhmar:

Pages 25-31 detail the asteroid. There's two or three keyed areas on the surface and a small subterranean dungeon. True to its Lankhmar-stolen name, Stardock contains a dock for space-faring ships. No details or SJ content, mind you, just a statement that the DM can add Spelljammer connections to an empty dock.
I had never noticed that there was a Stardock in Lankhmar before, although I did type something about it (I guess it didn't register).

Scrolls of Lankhmar has this to say about Stardock:

Stories: Stardock

The tallest mountain in the Mountain of Giants and nearly unclimbable, Stardock is home to a race of Invisibles as well as the Ice Gnomes. It is the fourth mountain in the chain from the south.
That mentions a short story called Stardock, which I think maybe I want to read. I'll have to work out what book it is in.

Anyhoo, I'm wondering if the Stardock from Forgotten Realms is inspired by Lankhmar in any way other than it's name.

What can you tell me about this mountain?

Interesting. I wonder if the city of Starport from Blackmoor's Duchy of the Peaks also was borrowed from Lankhmar?

It seems like a fairly generic name for a similar concept. I'd credit lack of imagination at least as much as outright copying (or stealing) a name.

"the Trollstep Mountains or the Mountains of the Giants: peaks include:
the great Stardock, which is according to legend where the Gods launched the stars into the nightsky, and populated by a race of unseen beings."

Not a spaceport/starship dock at all.

Ah, so a dock...but a dock for stars.

It's a great story, and will make you forget about all these phony Stardocks :)
