D&D Middle Earth in White Dwarf?

Post by Havard » Thu Jul 20, 2017 8:33 pm

In this thread, Rabindranath74 mentioned the existence of published Middle Earth material for Classic D&D from the 1980s:

Anyone know anything about these articles? How much material are we talking about? What areas were covered?

The Tolkien Gateway has a list of articles, but I don't have any of the issues listed.

Can I suggest getting this thread re-titled? Imagine magazine was published by TSR UK and White Dwarf by Games Workshop so they are very different things...

Was this back when Games Workshop was still the official D&D distributor in the UK? Does the White Dwarf content of that era have some sort of "official D&D status"? (In other words is this an official D&D conversion of Middle-earth?)

The 1st fiend folio book was essentially "monsters from white dwarf magazine". Take from that what you will.

Ideed. Same goes for several monsters that were later included in AC9 Creature Catalog for BECMI.

Well it could either be seen as an official D&D magazine, or a magazine with some official D&D content. I'd have to read some of the early issues to choose.

Indeed, I am curious about its status. Robin posted something about this issue and the authors involved here.

Do you mean articles or modules? There is a module based overtly on the Mines of Moria in WD. It is talked about on the Grognard Files podcast.

Nice!
I would say any Middle earth material from White Dwarf is of interest in this thread. I did not know that they included full modules. Do you have a link to the podcast episode?

It is talked about in their terrific dailydwarf feature in episode 6 part 2. The scenario appears in WD #38.

AFAIK, WD - back in the day when it was the best universal RPG magazine on the market - had the following Middle-earth related content:
  • Khazad Dum!, Issue #38, February 1983 (D&D scenario)
  • ICE's Fellowship of the Ring (Review), Issue #50, February 1984
  • Minas Tirith, Issue #53, May 1984 (the siege of MT for the Warhammer TT)
  • The Dawn of Unlight, Issue #64, April 1985 (appeared re-imagined for TOR in OM #18)
  • Fiend Factory: The Noegyth Nibin (Petty Dwarfs), Issue #65, May 1985
  • The Road Goes Ever On (MERP Review), Issue #66, June 1985
  • Star Spray, Issue #73, January 1986
  • Gobbledigook - Oh no, not another MERP ad!, Issue #74, February 1986
  • A Secret Wish, Issue #77, May 1986
  • MERP - Where and Back Again, Issue 79, July 1986
  • Up and Coming, Issue #80, August 1980
  • Taurëfantô, Issue #87, March 1987 (re-developed and updated in OH #27)
  • Letters from a Foreign Land, Issue #93, September 1987
Mechanics-wise, these articles used primarily MERP (being the official game back then). IIRC these are the WD contributions dealing specifically with Middle-earth. Shortly after the last article in #93 (somewhere around Issue 100), WD degenerated into an ad leaflet for GW's overpriced tabletop products.

EDIT: Thanks for the info regarding Issue #38! I edited the list accordingly and included a few other bits that were Middle-earth themed. Most of the stuff was authored by Graham Staplehurst. I am sure about content up to Issue #90 (original counting). But IMHO that was the time when WD's focus began to shift away from a universal RPG magazine to other priorities.

Dawn of Unlight, Star Spray, and Secret Wish are listed by Jeff Rients as dual-statted for MERP and AD&D. Letters from a Foreign Land is tri-statted for MERP, WFRP, and Call of Cthulhu. Mr. Staplehurst was author of Angmar, Gates of Mordor, Minas Tirith, Mouths of the Entwash, and Phantom of the Northern Marches for ICE, so he'd be a good person to have contributing.
