A cantina of alien races

Post by Ashtagon » Sat Dec 16, 2017 9:46 pm

So I'm trying to create a suitable mix of alien races for Generic Sci-Fi Campaign(tm). I'm not sure exactlyu what I do want. I know some of what I need, and I know some of what I must exclude...

1) Abslutely nothing that is existing IP. A "cat-race" is fine; "Larry Niven's Kzin" is not.
2) I don't want to simply have "elves/orcs/generic fantasy race" in space.
3) Ideally, I would pander to established SF tropes. It would also be nice to cover the alien races found in "UFO watcher" circles.
4) The alien race specs should ideally inform not just their individual characteristics, but also something about their culture and starship design.

It's a tall order, I know. Any suggestions on where to begin?

Future races from the Modern d20 book?

You could use the Twilight Imperium races :

Nordic aliens get their name from their strong resemblance to stereotypical Scandinavian peoples. Averaging six to seven feet tall, these blond-haired blue-eyed aliens are reported to be telepaths, although some say they possess magical powers as well. Nordics care more for Earth’s environment then they do its human inhabitants. So you may want to start recycling before we have to answer to our seven-foot-tall overlords. We could not find a picture, but we can only assume that they must look like Rutger Hauer.

Save vs TV Tropes!

You might also want to look at So You Want To / Create Believable Aliens.

Also, don't forget to include women who live on the moon, who have purple hair.

for the Sci-Fi spin

a Race of Sentient Machines descended from a long ancient highly advanced Race that mysteriously died out so quickly
they didn't even have time to turn off their equipment. <wiped out by a Gamma Ray Burst or planet-wide apocalyptic event.>

the advanced AI's remaining thus continued to operate and develop on their own forming smaller Constructs as needed for select tasks or environments.
eventually becoming fully Self Aware and began to explore the surrounding areas of space.

<fully self aware Droids that may or may not have the ability to alter their physical form into alternate formats than roughly Humanoid Bipeds.
such as assorted vehicles, crafts or creatures.>

^ See Fred Saberhagen's Berserkers.

The Berserker series is a series of space opera science fiction short stories and novels by Fred Saberhagen, in which robotic self-replicating machines strive to destroy all life. The first story was published in 1963.

These Berserkers, named after the human berserker warriors of Norse legend, are doomsday weapons left over from an interstellar war between two races of extraterrestrials. They all have machine intelligence, and their sizes range from that of an asteroid, in the case of an automated repair and construction base, down to human size (and shape) or smaller. The Berserkers' bases are capable of manufacturing more and deadlier Berserkers as need arises.

The Berserker stories (published as novels and short stories) depict the fight between Berserkers and the sentient species of the Milky Way Galaxy: Homo sapiens (referred to as "Earth-descended" or "ED" humans, or as "Solarians") is the only sentient species aggressive enough to counter Berserkers.

Some EDs are enslaved for intel purposes, and to provide assistance in tricking non-compliant EDs - they refer to these slaves/collaborators as goodlife, and all non-enslaved forms as badlife.

A couple of extra thoughts...

http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AlienTropes is useful reading for me.

The core book will probably include 5-6 aliens (along with 5-6 fantasy races, currently slated as dwarf, elf, halfling, orc, goblin, gnome).

I'll suggest a few gaming-related sources that largely avoid the IP issue by using real-world UFO lore instead of a purely original setting.

GURPS Atomic Horror, GURPS Illuminati, and GURPS Warehouse 23 all have useful info on the typical "UFOlogy" aliens (Grays, Loi/Nordic, Reptoids, etc.) as well as H.G. Wells' Martians (and their tech).

Kenneth Hite's two Suppressed Transmission collections also include a number of articles that touch on these aliens, as well as "ultraterrestrials" (John Keel's term for alien intelligences from outside our reality). One of my favorite articles on the subject is his "Ancient Astronaut Steel Cage Death Match," which hashed out a timeline for the secret history of the many alien races competing for control of the Earth.
