Which Historical / period adventure RPG did you play?

Post by shesheyan » Sat Jul 07, 2018 3:25 pm

Which Historical / period adventure RPG did you play? In the case of a game with more then one edition please specify which one in the comments.

The poll is limited to 10 options. If a game is not in the list please feel free to mention it below. I did not put generic systems like GURPS, D20 Modern or Savage worlds in the list on purpose.
Currently playing : Coriolis The Third Horizon
Preparing : D&D5E Home-brewing a mini setting

Pendragon as a player, and a few Bushido as a GM. Outstide the list, Flashing Blades had a great influence on me.

My most extensive historical Rpg was... Vampire. I masterised during several years a campaign in the late 18th century and French revolution.

I also took part to the writing of a famous historical Rpg in France, Miles Christi (where you play Templars struggling between their knight and monk duties).

Bushido and Pendragon for me
I think Call of Cthulhu could count for this as well - a lot of the game comes fromt he period.

None, unless you count Cthulhu Invictus and Cthulhu Dark Ages.

I played Pendragon a couple times. But primarily I played Space:1889 and GURPS. I also played a lot of the World of Darkness historical settings (lots of time travel in my Changeling game). I played Twilight:2000 once or twice as well.

Eventually I settled on GURPS for my historical play, I still run a World War II PBEM espionage game and a Space:1889/Ravenloft: Masque of the Red Death mash-up using GURPS.

I've played Gangbusters and Spirit of the Century once each.

This is definitely a category where I've played a lot more historical (or pseudo-historical) LARPs than I have tabletop RPGs. The closest I've come to a historical/period campaign is my Greek myth BESM game, but that's epic fantasy with just enough history mixed it to ground it in the setting.

About the only historical stuff I've had an interest in is the Historical References range of 2nd Edition AD&D books.

I wasn't interested in them, back in the day, but have been looking at raiding ideas for fantasy societies in more recent times.

I've only played in a couple games set in an alternate historical Earth:
  • Ancient Greece (using 13th Age rules)
  • Ancient Rome (using D&D 5e)

Wasn't Twilight 2000 a future history when it was published?

I just remembered that I also played in a Runequest campaign set in ancient rome. Since we used the Avalon hill runequest game including the races from Glorantha, I played a Duck. :P

But is that then "Historical" or "Fantasy Earth"? Back at school we played in Fantasy Earth Runequest (Games Workshop binding) but I don't really count that as historical...

I think that depends on your definition or in this case maybe the definition used by Shesheyan when he started the thread. He did include Victoriana which also includes magic, fantasy races and steam tech so I think that case is very similar to RQ's Fantasy Earth. Pendragon is also on the list and hardly historical in the strict sense.

I don't think I have ever played in a historical game that didn't include some form of supernatural element, fantastic technology or other modification.

I will comment more on this in your thread about categories. :)

I played a lot of Twilight 2000 in the 90s and early 2000s...which was easy to learn after playing plenty of classic Traveller.

Yep Twilight 2000 is a near-future setting published in 1984 not a historical setting. ;)
If you include Twilight 2000 you should also include the original Cyberpunk box set in 2013.

Among diceless games I played, there was also some set in historical periods :
- 30's Chicago, mixing polical, espionnage and detective themes. Then the PC's moved to Cuba and hired a young law student as a clerk - his name was Fidel Castro.
- 50's Groenland, with Danish officials struggling against an hidden Nazi criminal.
- Late 60's France, with PC playing left-wing rural ethnologists in a village.

Twilight 2000 is included in the poll. Never got the chance to play Cyberpunk, but I've always wanted to give it a whirl.
