RPG names similar to D&D ?

Post by shesheyan » Fri Aug 03, 2018 11:44 pm

With the success of D&D many titled their fantasy rpgs in similar fashion using the same letter twice.

D&D (abbreviation of two identical letters)
• T&T : Tunnels & Trolls
• C&C : Castle & Crusades
• DD : Dinky Dungeons
• DD : Dark Dungeons
• W&W : Wizards & Wyverns (micro indie)

• M&M : Mutants & Masterminds
• M&M : Mazes & Minotaurs
• V&V : Vikings & Valkyries
• B&B : Bunnies and Burrows
• V&V : Villains & Vigilantes
• E&E : Engines & Empires (steampunk Osr)
• FF : Fighting Fantasy
• C&C : Creeks & Crawdads (1986, parody)
• P&P : Powers & Perils
• LL : Labyrinth Lord
• B&B : Bandits & Basilisk
• D&D : Dangers & Dweomers
• S&S : Spellcraft & Swordplay
• S&S : Sword & Shield
• DD : Dragons at Dawn
• DD : Delving Deeper
• G&G : For Gold & Glory (clone of AD&D 2e)

AD&D (abbreviation of two identical letters with A in front)
• AD&D : Adventures Dark & Deep
• AFF : Advanced Fighting Fantasy

• Do you know of other such titles for fantasy rpgs ?
• What similar titles can you come up with ?

• Keeps & Knights is one I can think of.

There's a fictional RP game called Mazes and Monsters, in an early Tom Hanks movie of the same name.

Chivalry and Sorcery

I am not convinced that the ones with simply either "Dragon" or "Dungeon" in the name really count as "similar"; for one thing, the title of this thread isn't names similar to "Dungeons and Dragons", it is name similar to "D&D" and it's in the abbreviation that the similarity or difference comes through.
All the "Xxxx and Yyyy" systems abbreviate to "X&Y" - a mnimum of three syllables. The ones without the and/& abbreviate very differently, usually to "DX" or "YD", e.g. DragonQuest abbreviates to DQ - i.e. two syllables and not similar to D&D.

Now to contradict my own logic I am going to suggest Advanced Fighting Fantasy, puely because of the word "Advanced" (because I am an old AD&D player).

«AD&D» inspired titles work. I'm opening a new category.

While Dungeons & Dragons inspired these names do not abbreviate into two identical letters as per my OP.

RPG Geek has a page for a game called Creeks and Crawdads!

Dark Dungeons is specifically named after the Jack Chick tract, rather than named to look similar to D&D. :)

I think that "&" might be a mistake. :?

Advanced Fighting Fantasy is related to Fighting Fantasy, so if you are going to include Advanced Fighting Fantasy, you might also want to think about including the original.

All new titles added.

Powers & Perils by AH ! Found a v2 published in 2017 by the community. Very crunchy and detailed after a first look.

Other D&D books don't count as they are not a different game.

Yes, I tried to fiddle with it a little. I only picked it up because the designer was a close friend of Dave Arneson.

Yep. Just thought I'd throw them in there😊

Labyrinth Lord
Swords & Spells (by TSR long ago)
Swords & Sorcery (I think this was a Necromancer Games brand back in the 3E era)
Wizards & Warriors is an old computer game
Dungeons Dark & Deep
Knights & Knaves (a website)
Wyverns & Warriors
Bandits & Basilisk
Dangers & Dweomers
Mazes & Minotaurs
Spellcraft & Swordplay
Sword & Shield
Dragons at Dawn
Delving Deeper
For Gold & Glory (clone of AD&D 2e)

Labyrinths & Lizards
Advanced Labyrinths & Lizards
(Not real, i think; these showed up in a Google search)

There are also "pun names" like Truncheons & Flagons, Papers & Paychecks, Dungeons & Beavers (actual d&d variant played at caltech), Dungeons: the Dragoning (pun on WOD games)

Would "T&A" be a suitable stand-in for the Book of Erotic Fantasy...?

Not really. I made the mistake of buying that book; not only is it really dumb and completely unplayable, but it's not really even all that sexy.
