Scarlet Brotherhood origins

Post by Havard » Sat Jan 05, 2019 11:22 am

Did Gary Gygax create the Scarlet Brotherhood? When did they first appear? Could they be connected to the Red Mages of Blackmoor?

I think I remember asking Rob questions about them once upon a time, so IIRC they existed in Gary's game but I'm not 100% sure they were Gary's invention. They were described in the original GH folio. There's also an explicit reference to a "red" monk (one of the 3 8th levels to challenge to advance) in the PHB.

Were the Red Mages a part of the original Blackmoor campaign? For some reason, I was under the impression that they were a more recent (Zeitgeist era) product of Blackmoor lore.

In any event, I am not 100% certain, but still fairly sure that there is no connection between them and the Scarlet Brotherhood (which I do believe was a Gygaxian creation).

Supplement II: Blackmoor (1975) has a reference to The Land of the Red Coven in the Temple of the Frog Adventure. Based on this I think it very likely that they were part of the original campaign. Granted, we don't know much about them, so they might not even be mages. They were not mentioned in the FFC at all. I like connecting dots between older sources and the 3E/ZGG stuff, so I made the Land of the Red Coven be an older name of the Duchy of the Peaks, since that kingdom was founded by an unknown group of Mages. In the 3E material, I made the assumption that the Vadaley Clan from the Mage Wars was the same as this group.

It would be interesting to know when Gary created them though. He could easily have told Dave about it. Were they mentioned in (origial) Chainmail or the Castles & Crusades Society Newsletter (The Domesday Book)?

A bit off topic, but I should point out that one of the Ultra Rare Greyhawk adventures from the Adventurer's Guild Retail Program is for sale on Ebay. These adventures were produced by TSR for retailers with the intent that they would be run by groups at the store as an advertisement for a particular product. This one ties in to The Scarlet Brotherhood. https://www.ebay.com/itm/TSR-RPGA-Modul ... :rk:8:pf:0
