Zero RPGs 2018 (w/Campaign Survey Poll)

Post by Giorgio » Thu Dec 27, 2018 12:55 am

Revised: 1/26/2019

I played zero RPGs (Face to Face, VTT, Console, or PC) in 2018, a new experience for me in the last 20+ years or so of my life. A very depressing situation, as Real Life ™ hit me, my family, and my finances like a death count in every Games of Thrones season.

In 2019 I aim to correct this cosmic injustice, by running, playing in, and/or demoing the following RPGs below, and I am willing to GM/play at a game store, public library or university, and via VTT (Roll20 & Fantasy Grounds).

Availability dates and times from FEB-MAY 2019 (F2F and/or VTT) for demos, one-shots, and campaigns are:
.
FRI, SAT, SUN, MON: 12-9pm EST (Cool Stuff Games, Armada Games, Gathering Games; Roll20, Fantasy Grounds)
.
TUE, THU: 5-8pm EST (Critical Hit Games, Serenity Games)
.
WEN: 9am-9pm EST (Cool Stuff Games, Armada Games, Gathering Games; Roll20, Fantasy Grounds)

My rules preference is light to moderate rule complexity; player’s need not have prior knowledge of a campaign’s history or established lore/IP in order to play in any of my campaigns.

My GM style leans toward Storytelling (world building & sweeping stories) and Specialty (long campaigns, recurring themes like Good vs. Evil, Humanoids vs. Elder Gods…) for my fantasy campaigns, and Tactics (strategic and tactical challenges, galactic threats) for my science fiction campaigns.

My preferred player types are Casual Gamers, Story Tellers, Specialists, and Tacticians (as per Robin’s Laws of Good Game Mastering book), explanation and quiz linked below.

With ten campaign options to choose from, I am creating a poll to solicit feedback from potential players as to which of the options below garner the most interest, so I can focus my resources accordingly. Any campaign with a date in parenthesis is one that is pending a full Kickstarter (KS) or manufacture release date. Links to any games mentioned below available upon request.

I will be creating an Obsidian Portal page for each of the ten campaigns listed, with more information about the game system, and what kind of campaign I have in mind. These pages will start as default templates and will be improved on as time passes.

Poll Closes May 14, 2019 at 11:59pm EST.

(1/01/19) Request: Can someone create an avatar image for use on multiple forums sized: (#1) 75x75 pixels, (#2) 90x90 pixels, and (#3) 800x400 pixels; in black and white, a circle with the words (Top 10 RPGs 2019) in the middle? I would greatly appreciate it.

Questions, comments, and feedback welcomed. :)

I probably won't have time to commit to any more games online, but man there are a lot of cool ones on your list!

Iron Kingdoms, the Expanse and The One Ring would definitely be among my preferences! :)

Havard, those are the 10 ten campaigns I want to run as a GM in 2019, out of a list of at least 15-20 games I am own and that I didn't list. I will be working JAN-MAY 2019 to get each of those campaign settings at a "basic" level of completion (with pre-gen PCs and a few adventures ready), with the idea to run some demos in summer, and start full camapigns in Aug 2019. The level of interest from now till then will determine which campaigns I update to "moderate" and "advance" level of time, money and resources.

(Edit: Deleted last sentence and poll results)

I don't think I could play in any of those games, but it might be fun to follow along.

Do you think you might post game diaries of what is going on?

I saw that you said you would put up some content on Obsidian Portal and that you might use Roll 20 or Fantasy Grounds. Do you think you might stream any of your games (or record them and rebroadcast them on YouTube?

In reverse order:

1- No streaming or YouTube at this time.

2- Roll 20 or Fantasy Grounds VTT choice will vary for each game, based on presence or lack of, community datasets

3- Obsidian Portal: 2 of 10 are linked above; the next one under development is Mechwarrior A Time Of War (this weekend), the other seven will depend on survey poll interest.

4- OP will be my way of working on each campaign, keeping logs/diaries, and attracting player interest.

5- Within a week or two I will have a Facebook page created with info on all ten campaigns, so I can direct everyone to one place to follow along, currently information is spread over 8-10 different places.

Are you doing one Facebook page for all of your stuff or one Facebook page each for each different campaign idea?

BTW: Have you thought of putting up a forum avatar? It might help your posts stand out a bit more. And if you are trying to get people in about 8 places to come together, having a recognisable picture might help them recognise you. (I presume you will need some sort of logo for your "Zero RPGs 2018" page on Facebook.)

Reverse order:
1- I have not thought of a logo, I lack artistic skills, it's a good thing to think about.

2- I have not thought of using the same avatar in multiple places, added to my "to do" list.

3- One Facebook page with info on 10 campaigns, need to work out the logistics of doing so, but it will be after I have all 10 Obsidian Portal pages created first.

4- It is a lot of work, which is why I am setting aside a six month block of time to work on this project.

There are places online, where you can get free avatars. Or you can find a picture you like a clip an avatar out of that. :)

My Piazza avatar was originally my avatar on the WotC forums (and was from a set of Spelljammer avatars that WotC used to offer to users).

Update WEN 1/02/19: Combined Poll Results (from 10 sources); currently working on campaign research material for Mechwarrior (A Time of War), so I can create the next Obsidian Portal Page.
.
Total....Campaign
3 [Fantasy] Lex Arcana (KS; JUN 2019)
3 [Fantasy] The Lone Wolf Adventure Game
12 [Fantasy] The One Ring
11 [Steampunk Fantasy] Iron Kingdoms
16 [Multi/Cross Genre] Shadowrun 5E
6 [Science Fiction] Battletech: A Time of War
8 [Science Fiction] FFG Star Wars (AoR, EotE, F&D)
3 [Science Fiction] WH40K Wrath & Glory (JAN 2019)
2 [Science Fiction] Alternity Protostar (KS; JAN 2019)
5 [Science Fiction] The Expanse (KS; JAN 2019)
Looks like Shadowrun is in the lead then. :)

There isn't a Shadowrun forum at The Piazza...yet, but there have been three topics about Shadowrun, so maybe there will be a bespoke forum here eventually.

If you want to talk about your Shadowrun ideas (or just chat to other Shadowrun fans) you can start topics with "[Shadowrun]" tags in the title, in the Other Worlds forum.

.
JAN’19 Interest Recap:
.
Central Tampa FLGS: (9) Shadowrun 5E, (5) The One Ring
.
South Tampa FLGS: (9) Shadowrun 5E, (3) Mechwarrior 4E
.
Online: (9) Shadowrun 5E & Mechwarrior 4E, (7) The One Ring
.
Given the results so far, I will invest my resources into preparing the three RPG campaigns above (from the 10 options provide) for both F2F and VTT gaming for the rest of this month (FEB). I will continue to monitor and update the polls every two Wednesday until May to see if there are any changes, with a goal of having some demo games ready mid-March.
.
In the next few weeks I will be checking with people who have expressed interest in playing online, which VTT program they prefer (Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds) that I already have.
.
Thanks again to everyone who has been participating in this survey/poll so far.

.
To everyone who has expressed interest in a The One Ring RPG session, a few questions:
.
1- What time period/era and geographical region are you interested in playing in?
.
2- What types of adventures and scenarios would you like your PCs to experience?
.
3- How would you organize the following game elements in order of interest: social interaction, world building, exploration, combat, and fighting the forces of the shadow/corruption?
.
4- What kind of campaign tone & lore would you like to experience: light fun (The Hobbit graphic novel), large sweeping adventures (The LOTR extended edition films), or a deep dive into the world setting (The LOTRO books and its sequels/prequel materials)?
.
5-Considering that TOR is by default a rules light game, how much complexity and source material are you looking forward to on a spectrum from “Core Rulebook Only” to “Everything that the GM allows”?
.

I would like to run a TOR VTT session, but I need feedback from prospective players to get started, especially from the six people who voted for this option. ;)
