The Mechanized Infantry

Post by willpell » Sat Nov 28, 2015 10:09 pm

One of the five branches of the Tradespeak Empire's military unit. Least ethical and most hierarchical.

Motto: "One thousand iron fists; the mountain moves." In other words, "Together, we can accomplish anything." The Infantry's ethos is very much founded in utilitarianism - "might makes right" and "the end justifies the means", which the Emperor loudly frowns upon, but tolerates because of how good they are at By Gods Getting Things Done.

THE IMPERIAL BUREAUCRACY

Post by willpell » Fri Jan 15, 2016 1:29 am

A vast network (or, as some might call it, a vast tangle) of interlocking agencies which conduct the day-to-day administration of the Tradespeak Empire. While all power formally resides in the current Emperor himself, even his tremendous magical abilities do not extend to being everywhere at once, and so handling the various details of his plans is part of the mandate of the Bureaucracy. But just as much so, the legion of Ministries and Agencies and Offices and Chanceries are dedicated to obstructing the will of the Emperor, in order to limit the danger that he himself (or an impersonator successfully passing as him) could pose to the nation, in the event that he were corrupted, driven mad, possessed, or simply "woke up evil one day", as he himself admits is always a possibility.

The guiding principle of the Bureaucracy as a whole is known as the Silver Law; it states that the organization must always beware of its own tendency toward inertia, and sets out a mandate requiring all members to put their duty above their selfish interests. In defiance of the overall trend toward Lawful complexity that predominates in the Bureaucracy, the Silver Law is very plainly stated rather than legislatively complex, and any attempt at nitpicking one's way out of accountability to it invariably fails; in theory at least, any member of the entire vast organization may make a complaint that the spirit of this unwritten Law is being violated, and such a charge ostensibly makes its way directly to the Emperor by the shortest possible route, regardless of any attempt at compromising the channels meant to carry it.

Affiliation membership in the Imperial Bureaucracy represents association with a handful of Oversight Committees and Offices of Comptrollers and such, who monitor the Bureaucracy as a whole and direct its operations in a big-picture sense, helping to keep everyone on the same page and minimize institutional difficulties. Characters wishing to be affiliated with particular branches do not require a ranking with this Affiliation, although many of its characteristics are duplicated in most if not all of the divisions. (Such redundancy is typical of the organization as a whole.)

THE CRAWLING MOON

Post by willpell » Tue Mar 01, 2016 4:48 pm

Though sinister and fiercely contrarian, this organization of guerillas and countercultural agents is not motivated by evil, they merely adopt numerous diabolic trappings in order to shock others out of their complacency, presenting a portrayal of wickedness for the sake of pure performance art. They speak openly of "stealing souls", but their intention is truly to liberate the overly-hidebound from their lives of "safety" and "sanity", shattering their comfortable illusions and bringing them into the experience of powerful, overwhelming truths. Like many similarly Chaotic-Aggressive-Nonviolence agencies, their tactics are transgressive to the point of seeming rapey at times, but their goal is never to traumatize individuals, only to tear them free of "protective" cocoons which stifle their potential.

THE FACES

Post by willpell » Thu Jun 28, 2018 5:57 pm

Whiteleaf's version of the Six From Shadow, as described in Complete Champion. Players wishing to explore the Disciples of Legend affiliation, including the Mythic Exemplar and Squire of Legend prestige classes, should have their characters venerate The Faces, wearing the hexagonal-cube symbol in one of six colors to show their dedication to the Archetypes of adventuring. (The Marshal class is perhaps not as archetypal as the other five represented, and should possibly be replaced with some other class such as Bard, or even with a "Monstrous Adventurer" archetype, though this would require mechanical adjustments.)

HOUSE MASSARD

Post by willpell » Tue Jul 10, 2018 8:23 pm

Family from which 80% of the Tradespeak Imperium's Emperors to date have originated, although there is no official connection between the two organizations. (The Emperor position is merit-based, and the Massards are forbidden from holding rank in the bureaucratic office which administrates the necessary tests of diplomacy, organizational competence, sorcerous potential, and flexible yet unimpeachable ethical standards.) Uniquely determined not to host any black sheeps who could scandalize the throne by association, the Massard clan is often said to "manicure the family tree" through an extensive public-relations outreach plan, coupled with an extreme degree of exclusivity when allowing marriage into the House. Headquartered in the Capitol region for as long as both exists, the family prospers along with the Empire itself, although their access to the actual Imperial treasury is sharply limited. The difficulties of maintaining a flawlessly Good alignment, both in actuality and in public appearance, while engaging in political gamesmanship at the highest levels of power, are the challenge that besets all Massards whether or not they end up as Emperors (or, in theory, an Empress, though this has yet to occur). The Massards' heraldric arms are best known for featuring a set of false teeth as one of the devices; nobody seems able to explain why this symbol is present, yet any suggestion that such a distinctive (if not especially cool-looking) icon be removed is laughed off without consideration.

Note that obtaining Affiliation membership in House Massard is impossible for PCs; they are strictly a setting-background organization, and as thus will not be fully detailed using the PHB2 rules.
