Excellent idea ! My first box was Moldvay.
I wonder if the 1992 Dragon Quest board game was based in some way on the DragonQuest rpg TSR bought from SPI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DragonQuest
(small typo : Missing an L at Levels 1-3 in the 1977 line)

Great over view, Havard.
Wasn't the 1983 Basic Set by Mentzer only levels 1-3 instead of 1-4?

Re: Quick History of Classic D&D
D&D RC mostly collected the BECM of the Mentzer rules. The I part was turned into Wrath of the Immortals which isn't on the list.
Good spotting with The Continent though, I'd forgotten about that name! The Continent to The Known World to Mystara.

Re: Quick History of Classic D&D
From what I understand, the only thing the 1992 game had in common with the SPI/TSR RPG was the name. I believe we have a thread about that somewhere.shesheyan wrote:Excellent idea ! My first box was Moldvay.

Re: Quick History of Classic D&D
Good point. I have made a note of that now and included WotI as a separate entry.Morfie wrote:D&D RC mostly collected the BECM of the Mentzer rules. The I part was turned into Wrath of the Immortals which isn't on the list.
Indeed, I also get into the history of the setting a bit in my article on the history of the Mystara fan community.Good spotting with The Continent though, I'd forgotten about that name! The Continent to The Known World to Mystara.

A correction for the article at http://pandius.com/cdndhist.html
The D&D Adventure Game and subsequent Fast Play materials are not in any way Classic D&D products. They use the AD&D or D&D 3e game systems, despite not bearing "advanced" in their name.

In my OP I included the following: "(Rules deviate from the rest of the Classic D&D family, but still does not carry the AD&D label and is not identical to AD&D or 3E.)"
I don't agree that these are the AD&D or 3E systems either. The Fast Play Games are clearly their own thing. Perhaps they don't really belong in this thread, but on the other hand they aren't fully part of the other "edition families" either.
My "notes" section does indicate what other rulesets these Fast-Play sets are connected to.

Re: Quick History of Classic D&D
The Adventure Game and subsequent Fast Play adventure minigames use class and race seprately and AD&D classes like Paladin. They are slimmed down AD&D 2e products, not Classic D&D. The product entries on Acaeum confirm this. Not having Advanced in the name doesn't make them basic D&D products.
A correct, expanded and illustrated guide to the incarnations of Original and Classic D&D can be found at my blog, http://stockingthedungeon.blogspot.com under "Classic D&D Resources" in the sidebar.

I tend to agree; I wouldn't consider the Fast Play adventures to be Classic D&D.

Re: Quick History of Classic D&D
Still useful to have them on this list IMHO. Also they could be easily converted to basic.
