Do you use/want Giant & Dragon PCs in the Realms?

Post by Coronoides » Wed Jun 13, 2018 10:05 am

Hi all,

I want to start by saying that despite a AD&D 1e history I really don’t know much about the Realms. Recently, however I’ve begun dabbling and I have noticed that previous materials seem to suggest at least some fans use Giant and Dragon PCs in the realms. I have done a lot of analysis of the 5e races and work on how to build them. My book contains a few giant races in short form and here on the Piazza I am developing a Council of Wryms conversion (a Dragon-PC-centric world). I am considering developing full generic write-ups for both Giant and Dragon PC races for 5e. However, if these races were used by fans of the Realm in previous editions perhaps I’d be better adding some Realms flavour to these.
So...
Would the Realms fan-base want Dragon and Giant PC rules for D&D 5e?

Some evidence for Dragon and Giant PCs in the Realms.
2e Giantcraft included several Giantkin PC races
Twilight Giants trilogy of novels featured a verbeeg, firbolg, and giant blooded human as core party members and a lot of temporary alliances with full-blown giants.
The 3.5e Draconomicon included the Dragon Gods from the realms and Dragon PC rules in the same volume.
The 2e Draconomicaon was a Realms publication and while this did not include Dragon PC races did include rules for raising dragons. The Roleplaying dragons section would be of use for playing a dragon and descriptions of the Lord who attend the King of Justice and the Talons of Justice sure sound like dragon paladins.
The Year of Rogue Dragons trilogy included a Song Dragon, a Faerie dragon, and a Copper dragon as party members and many in-depth alliances with other dragon breeds

Do you know of any other evidence for giant and dragon PCs in the Realms canon?

Dragons, definitely. Giant, probably not.

Interesting, given giants are at least humanoid I would have expected it to be the other way around. Shows what I know.

I wouldn't want to see these monstrous types as characters. 5e already has dragonborn and goliath character races, and that's as far as I'd go for any players in a FR campaign.

That's the point. If you play a giant, you're just playing a human, only bigger. So why bother? Playing a dragon is something different, something you can't do with the normal races.

I’d think if you set in (a la Arcane Age) during the days of the dragon/Jotun wars you could have a really interesting setting to go along with it. Sure, the characters are powered up, but so will be all of the enemies.

Any good resources on that period in any edition?

Giantcraft and Draconomicon, both 2e books, can be of great help for this. Dragons of Faerûn, Great History of the Realms, and Storm King's Thunder also have information on that period of time that can be useful.

Well I would be in favor of offering the option for both, I just wouldn't play a giant personally (or maybe I would, but I'd be much more eager to play a dragon). But I voted for dragons anyway, and it turns out that was the more unique vote, so I'm glad to have represented a less popular viewpoint.
