You could try Scarlet Heroes. It provides a way to adapt an existing ruleset (generally an Old School one) to single play. In a nutshell, it changes the way HD and weapon/spell damage are used, so that combat balance is now reasonable for a single character.
I have tried it, and it works well.

Heard of that one several times but never read it. I think I will. Adding a link to the OP.

I would also recommend Scarlet Heroes for solo play. However, PCs are larger-than-life, heroic figures -- the game is built to allow one character to essentially take on the role of a whole party, rather than tailoring an adventure that's scaled to an average adventurer.

Indeed. That's why you can use it to play existing adventures as they are, with a single character.

Just found this little gem. Elminster's Guide to Solo Adventuring with 5E rules. At .75$ its an auto-buy even on a slim budget. I will read it before I continue my Solo quest.

I have an unread copy of Storm Kings Thunder and rules for dragon and giant PCs. I feel a one man EPIC in in the making! Excited by this idea.

(goes without say no spoilers please)
I started this this evening. So far I’m pretty pleased with how it is going but I’ve barely started. Getting late here but I wrote the report as I played and will start a thread tomorrow.

I have a friend who recently mentioned wanting to get into solo gaming or 1:1 gaming with his wife—specifically using D&D 5e. This looks like it would come in handy. Please keep us posted.

« All set for release on Friday (sept. 14th USA time). And now that everything is formatted properly, we're down to about 170 pages. Planning on making this available at a very reasonable price.

It's potentially usable for any edition, with a very small amount of on-the-fly conversion. It should sit alongside any edition of D&D really. There are things suggested at points, like "history roll to find out more about this area", but nothing's ironclad. It's left very loose and open. I'd even go further and say you could use just about any fantasy rpg alongside it.»

I’d be curious to eventually hear a review after the book is released and someone has played with it. For now the very small Eliminster’s Guide to Solo Adventuring is performing admirably for my solo adventure.

That Elminster's Guide is so useful that I think it can be of use for any edition. I'm going to used in my experiment to convert Reavers of Harkenwold to 5e.

Well the flow charts spit out DCs which are good for 3.X and later. For 1e, 2e, BECMI, OD&D you will need to convert of modifiers to check, % thief skills, % bend bars/lift gates, d20 roll over saves, and all the other varied mechanics used before the ‘unified’ system of 3.X. This would be a pain but doable.

RPG Review issue 42 will be a solo gaming special. If you would like to submit an article then you have about 6 months to write it.

RPG Review is a RPG fanzine that has been running for 10 years. Let me know if you want to write an article, solo adventure or review.

I finally had some $ to spend on the pdf of «The Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox» by PAUL BIMLER. 168 pages of tables to enjoy solo play. Its system neutral so you can play it with whatever edition you prefer.

At first glance it is very detailed. It could be used to generate a first draft of an adventure for a party. The PDF is bookmarked so its easy to navigate from one section to the other during actual play.

The two column lay out is very simple (and a bit bland I have to admit) but its is clear and easy to read. Which is good for a book you will constantly be shifting from page to page. Illustrations (colour/ b&W) are all good and above in quality.

The clue generation section sounds very interesting but first I will read Chapter 18 (the last chapter) : Exemple of gameplay session.

Excerpt «The Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox» How to play:

«OK, I think that’s all the info I need on how they met (the two PCs). Now to give these two a quest. To do this, I proceed to Chapter 7: Quests, and How To Generate Them. The first table in that chapter is the Quest Generation Table. I make a d100 roll on that table.

Quest Generation Table
D100 roll: 23 - Magical Chaos/ Curse. Very interesting! But I need more details, so I progress to the next table, the Quest Source Table, to find out how the PCs received this quest. Another d100 roll is required (you’ll be making a few of these).

Quest Source Table
D100 roll: 43 - Treasure map. Hmm, ok. A treasure map that reveals a magical curse? Well, it’s not too hard to fill out the details here. There is treasure to be had somewhere, but some sort of magical chaos stands in its way. I’ll decide that Brommar had the map (he found it on the body of a dead orc) , and this is what has brought him to Hourglass. When Brommar met Rhakhar, he decided it was probably a good idea to team up with this human ranger, as he could use the help on his quest to follow this treasure map! »
