Alien races and Sanity

Post by thorr-kan » Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:14 pm

So something I've been wondering for awhile now...

Humans and Mythos magic don't mix. Say good-bye to your Sanity.

But alien races like Deep Ones, Mi-go, Elder Things, or the Great Race aren't as...fragile?...clueless?...blind?...as humanity. Does using Mythos magic affect them?

Yes and no.

The drain of Sanity for the use of Mythos Magic is the stress of making sense of something that shouldn't be. The same way, all Sanity lost is, in essence, the mental stress of making sensef that doesn't make sense... plus the stress caused by horific but naturel events.

Mythos creature, some of which are Aliens, know more, in a fashion, and the Mythos Magic they use is aligned with the knowledge, so it doesn't cause the same stress.

A deep one would be comfortable with a Starspawn or Dagon...maybe not so much with a Star Vampire or Yog-Sothoth.
Roleplaying is not a Hobby...it's a Way of Life.

I think Lovecraft believed that human minds were uniquely fragile, and that there were probably intelligences out there which were beyond our comprehension. I suspect that he would have assumed the Deep Ones and Mi-Go and so forth were incapable of the frailty which humans feel.

Personally, I believe Lovecraft was uniquely fragile, and most people wouldn't suffer Sanity damage as easily as he assumed they would.

The way I see it, Sanity loss, actually represents humans gaining a greater understanding of how the universe really works. In order to gain such a understanding though, the human mind is changed to become more alien. The unfortunate price to gaining true understanding of the horrible universe, you lose the ability to function in normal human society.

Alien races probably exist somewhere in between this spectrum.

Hehe, exactly :)

Especially in a horror reality such as described by Mr Lovecraft.

This is also an interpretation I could work with, though I like it slightly less than my own (much better than HPL's though).
