[SAGA] Age of Magic

Post by shesheyan » Wed Nov 07, 2018 3:19 pm

Studio Tomahawk has finally decided to use their very popular semi-historical wargame ruleset, SAGA Dark Age, to create a fantasy version. Called SAGA Age of Magic the book will come with the info to play 6 factions. Due to come out in 2019. No firm date yet.

The number of models of armies is between 30 to 50 - units of 4, 8 or 12 models. Since Studio Tomahawk doesn't produce models it is strongly encourage to buy models from other manufacturers. LOTR war of the Ring, Warhammer Fantasy and D&D miniatures will work. Large beasts and war machines are part of the system, which is a new fun twist not included in Dark Ages.

The system uses a novel battle board system with icon dice to generate powers and actions each turn. Once the icon dice are rolled the player buys activations and powers with the results. Less activations means more powers and vice versa. I've played the Dark Age version and its easy to understand and doesn't suffer from the rules bloat WHF is know for. A good ressources management game combined with traditional d6 attacks and saves.

Fatigue also played an important role. Fatigued units are not as good. A unit that has reached maximum fatigue cannot activate anymore and must rest.

Games usually last between 60 to 90 minutes.

I like the dice! :)

I could use these with Mystara's Northern Reaches...

Yes you could.
There are other dice sets with different types of icons from other nations of the Dark Ages and the Crusades.

It is really a fun system guys. There are two formats of play. The starting format is 4 points (17-25 models) and 6 points standard format.

Bought a batch of D&D Wizkids models for my Age of Magic army yesterday. I'm doing a Force of Nature army with a critter theme. The spiders are the militia (armed peasants). The Tri-Kreens will be the soldiers (lances or bows). The Myconids will be the elite guards. The Drider will be the Lord (leader). For the oversized creatures I will use Shambling mounds. I still have to find a «critter themed» model for cavalry.

Here is a link to a short video (15minutes) to understand the basic army construction and deployment rules. If you like the first video listen to part two for info on the icon dice use and activation :

Finally a detailed article by someone who grabbed a copy of the rules at the Salute convention in the UK. I'm really liking this set of rules.

It makes my think of the Battle of the Five Armies in LOTR.

My first game of SAGA Age of Magic. Really like how the game plays out. It feels like WHFB without all the bad rules by GW. I played Force of Nature against my friend's Viking Horde.

Thank you! They fit. They are in fact official D&D miniatures by Wizkids. The beauty of SAGA is that they let you use models from any manufacturer. So you can reuse old models with new models.

Thank you! i will have to track some down. i am working on converting a couple of Goblin spider rider minis for an upcoming campaign, if I can find these, it should make it much easier and, hopefully anyway, cheaper to do the rest of the unridden spiders.

I also watched the video you linked to for SAGA and it looks really interesting. I might have to talk a friend or two into giving it a try so thank you for that as well.
