What other pulp character could fit in Barsoom?

“As you know I am not of Barsoom; your ways are not my ways, and I can only act in the future as I have in the past, in accordance with the dictates of my conscience and guided by the standards of mine own people.” All RPGs base based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom stories can be discussed here.

What other pulp character could fit in Barsoom?

Post by Yaztromo » Fri Dec 07, 2018 3:22 am

Reading this thread ( viewtopic.php?f=108&t=16009 ) about Tarzan on Barsoom, I'm thinking about other possible pulp characters fitting in Barsoom.
Any suggestion?

Cool topic idea!

There was a discussion on Facebook a few months ago where someone suggested using the older generation of characters from the Indiana Jones cast in a Masque of Red Death adventure. So not Indy himself, but Henry Jones Sr., Marcus, Salah etc. Maybe Prof. Ravenwood. Could any of them have made it to Mars? Or maybe Belloq's father as a villainous Frenchman?

Are you trying to do things that would tie-in well with John Carter or come up with ideas that would have a different feel to John Carter?

Because, if you are going for a different vibe, perhaps you could use the basic premise of Barsoom and send over people from an earlier era of time.

How about Barsoom with Robin Hood?

Or how about a crossover based on the story of The 13th Warrior, but with the Arab character and the Viking characters travelling into a cave and being transported to Mars?

Or how about Mesoamericans vs Martians?

There is probably a bunch of other crossover ideas you could get from other eras of history and other regions of the world. :)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote stuff other than Sherlock stories, and Professor Challenger from his book The Lost World would make for a good addition to the cast of Pulpies go to Mars.

I was initially thinking along the lines of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, but the above ideas are absolutely brilliant!

If you haven't seen the tv show Dracula (2013), I suggest checking it out.

This reminds me of the fact that L. Sprague de Camp wrote a story about Harold Shea going to Barsoom (“Sir Harold of Zodanga”). :D

This isn't technically a pulp character, but a character from the same timeframe would be Jeffrey Stewart, the Reconstruction Era Zorro from the 1947 serial Son of Zorro.

I don't think that investigators (of people) would fit too much in Barsoom, due to psionic powers.
What do you think? How about Sherlock Holmes of Mars? Would he make such a difference?

Yep, that's the one. One of Peggy Stewart's few serials. She hated doing them because they took much longer to film than features.

There is an obvious similitude between Frankenstein and the Synthetic Men of Mars...

After all also Conan the Barbarian could fit pretty well on Barsoom...
