I've always thought the "travellers" comments were pretty clear signals, but 2300 might have had some influence on his view of colonial space/travel/frontier worlds as well.

I'd have to check on the timing, but there were already a few identical universes that worked this way.

The universe that Riddick's movies took place in revolved around a system of close orbiting stars, IIRC, and after Firefly's cancellation, the rebooted Battlestar Galactica's Twelve Colonies were based in a double binary, or binary +1 extra star, with many planets & moons orbiting.

The short version is: the concept wasn't new, and I am sure that it was used by more than one or two famous science fiction authors bitd, that also influenced Marc Miller as he created Traveller and his randomly generated star system creation system.
