Adapting The AD&D1e Book of Lairs II (1987) to Mystara?

Weird red metals, dominions, immortals, hollow planets, invisible moons, and a lot of glorified magic zeppelins. It's all here.

Adapting The AD&D1e Book of Lairs II (1987) to Mystara?

Post by Havard » Mon Jan 14, 2019 8:21 pm

I was flipping through the Book of Lairs books (I and II) when I noticed something interesting about Book of Lairs II:

The authors include Deborah Christian, David Cook, Ed Greenwood, Jenell Jaquays, Anne Gray McCready, Steve Perrin, Jon Pockens and Allen Varney (and others).

Coordinators for the book are Bruce Heard and Karen S. Martin.

Now, not only the credit of Bruce Heard, but also many of the other names on the list should be familiar to Mystara authors.

Allen Varney has several adventures that I am finding particularly interesting, such as the adventure on Dervishes (Ylaruam anyone?) which take the party to a place called the Mosque of Eternity on the Ethereal Plane.

I am still reading so there may be a lot more!

Any other Mystara fans taken a look at this one?

Interesting, I should check the content to see if it could be easily adapted..

Not only the Book of Lairs 1 &2, but also AD&D2 treasure maps hold interesting stuff somehow Mystara related; (a wooden treasure map of Isle of Dread for example, or Nithian Pyramids and then, as you speak, the names of the authors.
I recall something Denise-Randall-Lyle (of TSR UK-was a few years a good friend)) said that this was intended originally, but made more general to apply the other worlds too.

Indeed, I bought the Treasure Maps thing after you pointed that out.

Book of Lairs 1 seems less relevant. It was written by James Ward and Mike Breault, both with close ties to Greyhawk. I'm sure some of that material can be adapted, but Book of Lairs II has a much stronger smack of Mystara IMO :)
