Sasquatch's latest timeline places the Protostar Mission Guide PDF-release some time mid-February, 2019.
Is this out yet? Any thoughts on this book?

Yes, along with the Arms & Equipment Guide, which includes the cybernetics rules module.

Here it is: Alternity Protostar Mission Guide.

And here is the blurb from DriveThru RPG:
Alternity Protostar Mission Guide on DriveThru RPG wrote:Alternity Protostar Mission Guide
From Sasquatch Game Studio

Image

The year is 2268, and humans have settled Mars, the asteroid belt, and the moon systems of the outer planets. On Neptune's moon Triton, a mysterious alien gate leads to a network of wormholes spanning hundreds of star systems. But this is a dangerous time to be alive: crime lords, despotic governments, and corrupt megacorps are all fighting to control the future. Choose your friends--and enemies--carefully.

The Protostar Mission Guide is the first supplement and perfect companion for the new Alternity Science Fiction Roleplaying Game from Sasquatch Game Studio. This adventure anthology and campaign sourcebook includes:
  • An overview of the power groups, villains, and technology of the Protostar setting.
  • A description of the Solar System in the 23rd century.
  • Five ready-to-play adventure episodes set in the Solar System ... and beyond, written by Richard Baker, David Noonan, Stephen Schubert, Steve Townshend, and Steve Winter.
For use with the Alternity Core Rulebook. Also check out the Protostar Arms and Equipment Guide available on DriveThruRPG
I'd be interested to know how compatible this setting is with the original Alternity rules.

The reviews over at alternityrpg.net have been.... well, let's just say less than stellar (if you'll pardon the pun)

As such, I have as yet remained unconvinced to part with my hard-earned dollars.

Setting material is slim, but I found enough to work with. I ran one of the scenarios with positive response.

Hi Starglim!

I noticed you are new here. If you have the time later, you may want to introduce yourself to the rest of the bunch in the Hello Thread. :)

In any case, welcome to The Piazza! :)

That is good to know! I was getting a bit depressed by the reviews. How would you sum up this setting in a few sentences? :)

What are the main power groups mentioned?

I have a few theories about the setting, so it's only fair to separate my thoughts from the canon.

Having said that, I've mostly used the "Seven Things to Know" text to introduce the setting to a new set of players, expanded with a few paragraphs from the Mission Guide to a bit over a page.

Earth
  • European Confederation
  • Saharan League
  • Socialist Collective of China
  • American Union
  • United Nations
  • Lunar States
  • a hundred or more others
Solar System
  • Helios League (Mercury and sun-circling space habitats)
  • Republic of Mars
  • Asteroids (city states)
NGOs and Corporations (I'll include both "Factions" and "Villains" as it doesn't seem a particularly useful distinction)
  • Church of Human Transcendence
  • Emancipationist Front
  • Minerva Foundation
  • Terran Brigade
  • Bakunawa Cartel
  • Genesis 6
  • Tethys-Hygeia Syndicate

Nice summary!

Most of this looks fairly standard. I think the NGOs and Corporations Section is probably the part I find most interesting.

Similarly to another recent list, a number of organisations don't merit a heading but come up briefly in adventure hooks and sidebars:
  • Krakens, an outlaw gang in the worst district of Vesta
  • a secretive patron called Icarus, hiring expert teams [particularly interesting as it/they/a different organisation of the same name also feature in the Stellar Union setting from the playtest]
  • Psyche Miners’ Guild
  • megacorp QuantarX
