Poll: which games have you run (as DM/GM)?

Post by agathokles »

Following a suggestion from Havard, I'm starting a poll asking more specifically which games you have run rather than played -- this is to measure the interest in specific genres and types of games, as having merely played a game means you know about it, but not necessarily have a keen interest in it (e.g., I've tried Vampire, but it's not my cup of tea).

For now, I'm starting with a single poll, with very wide categories -- you can list specific games in the reply.

Myself, I've run:
  • D&D (BECMI, AD&D 2e, DragonFist, some test runs of 4e and pre-release 5e): two long-running BECMI D&D (set in Karameikos and Norwold), plus a long AD&D 2e campaign (set in Karameikos), and a shorter Dragonfist one (using the original setting, Tianguo);
  • Call of Cthulhu (only the classic era): many campaigns, including Masks of Nyarlathotep, Horror on the Orient Express, Shadows of Yog-Sothoth, and a conversion of Trail of Cthulhu's Eternal Lies;
  • WitchCraft RPG, Conspiracy X (including conversions of Dark*Matter and Night's Black Agents materials): the NBA's Dracula Dossier campaign, plus two homebrew campaigns, one of which adapted several Dark*Matter modules;
  • Star Wars (Saga Edition): one run of Dawn of Defiance;
  • Mutants & Masterminds: one run and a half of the Emerald City Knights campaign;
  • Shadowrun: a couple of modules;
  • Dragon Age: a few adventures, generally I use it when only a few players show up in a large party.

Great thread! :)

Here's what I have run:
  • D&D (BECMI, 2nd Ed, 3E, 4E, 5E). Mostly using Mystara and Blackmoor as settings.
  • ElfQuest (The BRP derived RPG). One of my early attempts at GMing. I found it challenging and looking back I'm not sure how good I think this campaign was, but we did play quite a few sessions before the campaign died.
  • d20 Modern (short lived monster hunter campaign)
  • TWERPS (I think this was just a one shot in a modern type setting).
  • TORG (Short lived).
  • Star Wars D6. I think I ran two or three campaigns.
  • Shatterzone. A fairly long lasting campaign in a sector of space that was largely developed by me and my players.
  • Dragonlance SAGA (Both in Dragonlance and in the Mystara/Red Steel Setting)
  • GURPS: One campaign set in a "supers"/"Cyberpunk-ish world of my own design. And also a Mystara campaign.
  • MasterBook: Mystara campaign that was a continuation of the GURPS Mystara campaign.

Aliases: Håvard Frosta, Havard Blackmoor, Blackmoorian, Dragon Turtle etc

Here's what I've run, using the poll's categories:

D&D and derived: Basic, Expert, 1E, 2E, 3.0, 3.5, 5E (I didn't like 4E enough to ever try running it, I just ran 3.5 for 10 years instead); Pathfinder 1E; and (very briefly) True20/Blue Rose.

Cthulhu Mythos: a couple short campaigns using GURPS 3E.

Modern Supernatural/Urban Fantasy/Horror: D20 Modern (briefly), Unisystem (Buffy/Angel, briefly).

Sci-Fi: (briefly) Star Frontiers.

Other Fantasy games: GURPS 3E, BESM 2E & 3E (nominally an anime game, but I've used it for fantasy), Fantasy AGE (briefly), Tunnels & Trolls (briefly).

Other games: I checked this to account for the handful of LARPs I've helped run and/or write (the latter were both very mixed genres).
Tim Emrick, Green Ronin Freebooter and Keeper of the Freeport Errata
Time of the Tarrasque: My homebrew Pathfinder campaign (2017-).

Cool! That makes you a very versatile gamemaster indeed.

Care to share which games you have run in each category?

Straight down the line.

Dungeons & Dragons: AD&D 1st and 2nd, Rules Cyclopedia, D&D 3.0, 3.5, and Pathfinder, D&D 5th.

White Wolf: Werewolf: the Apocalypse and I've run some mixed-splat games; I feel no particular need to ever do so again. Outside of the World of Darkness, I've run multiple successful long-term Street Fighter: the Storytelling Game campaigns, and SFRPG is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Call of Cthulhu: Have done on several occasions. Again, not something I feel the need to do again, though I might be interested in the system adapted to a genre I find more compelling.

Modern Urban Fantasy: Lots and lots of Dresden Files. d20 Modern - Urban Arcana.

Westerns: Deadlands, Sidewinder. Sixguns & Sesheyans using the Alternity rules. Werewolf the Wyld West.

Space Opera: Every WotC Star Wars game. Star*Drive in the d20 Future and Alternity rules. Buck Rogers XXVc. Spacemaster: Privateers.

Cyberpunk Games: Shadowrun 3rd and 4th.

Superhero Games: TSR's Marvel SAGA, EN World's Four Color to Fantasy for D&D and d20 Modern, but Marvel Heroic Roleplaying is the only game that actually feels like comic books to me.

Other Fantasy" Rolemaster (RMFRP and 2e/Classic) and its gentler offspring, High Adventure Roleplaying and Middle Earth Roleplaying. HARP was my fantasy game of choice between getting out of 3.X and getting back into AD&D. Palladium Fantasy Roleplaying. Barbarians of Lemuria.

Other Games: Other genres: post-apocalyptic: Gamma World 2nd and 4th, the Alternity version, the d20 version (never again). Deadlands: Hell On Earth. The unpublished AfterWorlds setting for HARP Sci-Fi. Omega World. Darwin's World. d20 Apocalypse with multiple variants. Barbarians of the Aftermath with its glorious "build your own apocalypse" rules.

Mixed Genre Games: This is where I live.

My preferred form of D&D is genre-interstitial, taking Spelljammer and more heavily empasizing its science fiction and weird fiction facets and adding in more non-European fantasy influences.

Well, either that or Hyborian Mushroom Kingdom. Or both. I've tried to run this in HARP, Street Fighter, Shadowrun 4e, Cortex Plus, and Pathfinder.

Using different Palladium subsystems for the perfect game of TMNT.

Street Fighter and Shadowrun are actually interstitial out of the box.

And the biggest game I have always failed is my White Whale, the Planescape/Star*Drive crossover, which I am just about finally ready to let go of.

Regarding BRP, the system powering Call of Cthulhu, it is used in Stormbringer, Nephilim, and other games in different genres.

Here's a list of BRP based settings. :)

Some considerations after this first round of responses:
  • I assume all the respondents have DMed at least one version of D&D or related games.
  • Most have also run campaigns in the Sci-Fi and Space Opera genres. Looking at the responses from the dedicated poll, I suspect this is due to the fact that TSR and WotC have had a relatively large number of games in this genre (Alternity/Star*Drive, Star Wars d20 and Saga, Star Frontiers, D20 Future).
  • Wild/Weird West has fewer responses, probably because it is a tighter grouping with respect to the relatively wider options such as Sci-Fi or Modern Supernatural.
  • Also, few people have run White Wolf games, which is what I suspected in the other thread -- many people have played these games, but probably on a less regular basis and with less investment than D&D and the like.
  • Most other options get more or less 1/2 of the responses w.r.t. D&D, proving that the community includes knowledge about many systems. The exception is Cyberpunk, which gets only 1/3.

I've run the following, which I did my best to classify under the categories provided:
  • D&D and derived fantasy games: 13th Age, Shadow of the Demon Lord, Dungeon Crawl Classics, Sharp Swords & Sinister Spells, Castles & Crusades, Palladium Fantasy, Basic (Black Box) D&D, 4th Edition D&D, 5th Edition D&D
  • Wild West and Weird West games: A cybernetic Old West game in a setting my friend and I created using Heroes Unlimited rules
  • Sci-Fi and Space Opera games: Robotech, Mechwarrior
  • Cyberpunk games: An attempt to run a Bubblegum Crisis game using GURPS Cyberpunk
  • Superhero games: Heroes Unlimited, Marvel Super Heroes, GURPS Supers
  • Other Fantasy games: GURPS Fantasy
  • Other games: RIFTS, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness

I love Street Fighter and I am sad that i have never been able to run or play it. If you've never heard of it, you should check out Fight! on DriveThru, the 2nd edition of it just released and, while the system is completely different, it is very much a love letter to fighting games and SFRPG style games.

as for the question at hand

D&D / d20 - I have run nearly every edition of this other than White Box, though 4E is far and away my personal favorite. Pathfinder2E seems like fin, though I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

WW - I have run everything but Hunter and V5 for WoD, and everything through the release of Demon the Decent for CoD. I really love these games, but its harder and harder to find people i want to play them with. I find my taste in game has changed but the people i used to play with's tastes have not.

Cthulhu - I've run both CoC and Trails of Cthulhu, i enjoy the latter rather more than than the former, though i love BRP as a system.

Modern Fantasy / Horror - i ran a lot of d20 Modern and some All Flesh / Con X. Most of my time in this genre was WW and thats its own category. I am also going to include Nightspawn / Nightbane here, a very underrated Palladium horror game, sadly held back by Palladium's in house system. fun character creation though. and great 90's artwork from Brom on the cover.

Wild West / Wierd West - This is almost exclusively Deadlands in its various incarnations though i've runa couple of Colonial Gothic one shots.

SciFi / Space Opera - so much Star Wars in all of its releases. SAGA and d6 are my favorite to run. I prefer to play FFG's version over running it. Outside of that, i've run Traveler (i love the setting and hate the system) Mechwarrior (which lasted longer as a battletech campaign than a mechwarrior one once we all realised all we wanted to do was pilot mechs and pew pew everything) and Fragged Empire (onlya one shot, but i really enjoy this game and i want to play more)

Supers - from FASRIP to M&M to MHRP. But my favorite game in this genre is Smallville. Without a doubt my favorite character generation as a mini game system of all time.

Other Fantasy - Exalted, Anima, Godbound (OSR, but its so different from its D&D roots that i put it here), Earthdawn, I know i am forgetting some, we played a lot of random little fantasy games over the years, but its not something i run much anymore.

OtherGames - Rifts (classic and savage) is just so much fun. Same with Gama World, and all of the Year One games. Also Shadowrun, i've run every edition except first and 6th.

Seems like a lot but i've been running a playing games for almost 30 years (saying that makes me feel super old) and we would play 4 or 5 days a week when i was a teenager which means we played a lot of stuff. and a lot of it was stuff i would never play now but I am glad i did then.
