X10 Red Arrow Black Shield - this Soul Gem thing...help please:)

Post by Big Ulf » Wed Oct 09, 2019 9:01 pm

Hey so playing through X10 for the first time, lots of fun. You just have to make it your own and my players love it.

But found an inconsistency (go figure) in the adventure - there's two different mentions of assembling the Dagger, and question of what happens to the Soul Gem.

First is in "Special Encounter 1", which "has" to happen (and after the Aelfheim and Shires missions), and the second is
P. 26, the lead to "War of the Master" in the section "Visit from Laran".
It's basically the same entry. But the second seems to assume the PCs don't have the SoulGem, maybe the Emissaries teleported away with it in Special Encounter 1.
The Master then seems to have it in the encounter with him at the end.
Also, it's called the Soul-Gem of Thanatos and the Soul-Gem of Light. Is this just the same thing named two ways?

thanks for any help.

Hrmmm. Seems to be a mix-up in the sections you've described. Laran sends the PCs after the Soul Gem, but is disintegrated before he can tell the PCs how to use the Dagger, and its obvious from reading the entry that the PCs do NOT have the Soul Gem after all.

First off, I believe you should assume that the Soul Gem of Thanatos is the same thing as the Soul Gem of Light. Assuming that will make things less complicated for you and your players. Refer to it as one or the other throughout play so your players don't get the idea that there is more than one, or they'll head off on some wild moose chase that will derail your game.

This is not the first Soul Gem mentioned in D&D/AD&D modules. The first was the Maguffin in C2 "The Ghost Tower of Inverness", and AD&D tournament module from 1979 set in the World of Greyhawk and written by Allan Hammock. That module gives the DM a bit more background on that Soul Gem, created by an all powerful wizard/being named Galap-Dreidel before the Invoked Devastation and Rain of Colorless Fire.

If you wanted to use this background, please note that I believe that the Invoked Devastation and Rain of Colorless Fire from the World of Greyhawk is the same Twin Cataclysms in Mystara's ancient history, so Mystara and Greyhawk are linked by way of a dimension sundering event that split reality into two separate realities: that of the World of Greyhawk, and the world of Mystara. That way you can link C2's Soul Gem to X10's Soul Gem.

The pregenerated PCs in the tournament version are mostly levels 5-7 characters, and are brought up from the gaol and are offered a pardon of sorts by the Duke of Urnst for getting the Soul Gem back to the Seer of Urnst. The Ghost Tower is a funhouse dungeon with many puzzles, traps, tricks and downright mean-ass monsters. The Soul Gem itself is the most difficult encounter. When the PCs get to the top floor, the Gem is in the center of the circular chamber and its rays of light will suck out the soul of any PC who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A big THANKS! to Giant Space Hamster & Chimpman for the cookies! (Dark Side be damned!) :D

As a side note, but perhaps something to lend some inspiration, I've always felt that the Soul Gem in X10 had remarkably similar properties to the gem that holds Xanathon's life essence in module X3: Curse of Xanathon.
