What makes the better swamp god, do you think?

Post by Wakshaani »

Giant frog? Giant snake? Giant alligator?

What's the best thing to be on the other side of a King Kong-like human sacrifice post while drums summon it for the sacrifice that keeps the tribe safe for another month? What makes a band of PCs go, "Okay, we're gonna need a rocket launcher for this one..."

Giant plant creature.

If you really want to throw the team a loop, borrow from Avatar: TLA and put a person at the heart of that plant creature.

Sounds a bit like the Wicker Man, too. Except the Wicker Man would be on fire with a person in it.

This is more "Tie a person to a wooden post, back way away, use drums to summon the big thing to eat the sacrifice nd leave the rest of you alone". thing.

Fire bad. :D

A construct, if you want a really nasty surprise.

Maybe a Clanker of machines for some kind of monthly duty.
Maybe a statue of Los Asangrados deity animated by the bloodier sect of the cult.
Maybe a Weird Science robot collecting test subjects for repeated month-long experiments.
Maybe a rogue Occultech construct which uses enslaved human brain but needs monthly replacements due to flawed life-support.
Maybe a disguised Kanawa robot for framing "Foreign Agents from so-called Delphi Council" as a culprit of monthly extortion.
Maybe...

The giant frog is by far my favourite. There's something very frightening to use a creature that is mostly harmless in its regular form and make it a giant god-like thing.

Also, not expecting a fight against a creature makes you underestimate its potential... When thinking of snakes or alligators, you immediately know what to expect and beware of because you would fear them in real life. You need a little more imagination to realize that a giant frog could use its tongue to get a reach of several meters and swallow you entirely few seconds later. Just the lenght of the monster's jumps should scare any Storm Knight who was hoping to be safe at while shooting it at range with his guns.

Exactly. Frogs have some potential which is why they were on the list.

But the image of a snapping turtle rising up out of the murk, shell looking like a small island, is also pretty boss.

But I don't think a PC group would fare as well against that. Still figuring it out.

It's hard to hear "swamp" and not go to alligator, but IMO they've been done to death. So I'll add a vote for turtle. Turtles can be meeeean, yo.

You could get away with making it physically terrifying by giving it a low Trick and/or Taunt. Maybe build in some environmental hazard/obstacle which PCs can use with an Outstanding Interaction to either, take it out, or, at least to put it on ice temporarily while they work out a more permanent solution? *shrug*

Alligator Snapping Turtles are TERRIFYING, and would be perfect. That being said.

River Dolphin. With water magic that allows them to "swim" through the air and punch you with their nose.

Situation reversal: The giant 'god' turns out to be a vessel piloted by the previous 'sacrifices'. Since the townsfolk always sacrifice the people they dislike the most, someone concocted this scheme to help these folks escape from the clutches of the abusive townsfolk and keep them away from the little community they've set up out in the swamp.

Reverse the reversal: There's a Nightmare Tree somewhere nearby and both groups are being pitted against each other by an Orrorshan Big Bad who's goal is to corrupt as many from both groups as they can.

Actually I would favour a massive tangle of lamprey.
Something horrific risen from the depths.
It's one of the scenes that Peter Jackson did well in his King Kong reboot when the cook got consumed!
See Deep Rising for a massive version!

A Rat King, only instead of Rats, it's lamprey? That would be amazing and terrifying

One of my friends had one crawl into his backyard from a stream just off of his property. They had to get the local zoo to help them get it back to the river because it attacked and drove away the city's animal protection people. I love them so much.

Alligator snapping turtles are like a real animal that seems to have escaped from the Monster Manual. "It's a turtle. And it has AC 19, two hit dice, and bits as hard as a battle-axe. Also it has excellent camouflage, and although usually docile, occasionally attacks and maims people because it's a bastard."

Velvet worms are everything I hate about centipedes, plus slime, and bodies I don't want to touch. Also they appear to be fairly intelligent.
