How many editions?

Post by Havard » Mon Feb 28, 2011 11:04 pm

How many editions/versions of Traveller are there?

Edit:
  • Traveller (usually called "Classic Traveller") 1977 { CT } GDW
  • Mega-Traveller (updated and modified CT) 1987 { MT } GDW
  • Traveller: The New Era (significant re-write of the rules and setting) 1993 { TNE } GDW
  • Marc Miller's Traveller (another complete re-write of the rules) 1996 { T4 } Imperium Games
  • Traveller 20 (used OGL/SRD D20 system rules) 2002 { T20 } QLI/RPGRealms Publishing (QuikLink Interactive)
  • GURPS Traveller (used the 3rd edition of the GURPS rules, later material uses 4th ed. rules) 1998, 2006 { GT } Steve Jackson Games
  • Traveller Hero (used the 5th edition HERO rules) 2007 { HT } Comstar Games
  • Mongoose Traveller (yet another complete re-write... this time reverting to a near-clone of CT) 2008 { MGT } Mongoose
  • Traveller5 (still another complete re-write, not related to MGT, but by Marc Miller) 2009 { T5 } Far Future Enterprises
  • Mongoose Traveller 2nd Ed / New Traveller { MGT2 } 2016, Mongoose Games
Thanks to Blackbat and others in this thread for the material above!

I think there was something like 5 editions to Traveller, then MegaTraveller, and then a series of Traveller books under other games (GURPS Traveller and at least one other game, can't remember what; d20?), and then finally another release of Traveller under its own rules system. Probably eight or nine, depending on how you count them. I don't think Traveller 2300 falls under the Traveller umbrella; its an extension of Twilight 2000, as I understand it.

There was definately one called T20, for the D20 system.
Is Traveller 2300 the same as Traveller the New Era?

Traveller
MegaTraveller
Traveller New Era
GURPS Traveller
Traveller T20
Traveller - Mongoose Edition

These I am pretty sure about. Wasn't there another one as well?

I know there was a dragon article about Traveller d20, so maybe they did go ahead with a full d20 version later on (that sounds familiar).

No; IIRC, Traveller 2300 is a hard-science game set 300 years after Twilight 2000 (a post-WWIII game set in a nuked-ravished world). The New Era, IIRC, is set after a computer virus completely thrashes the Traveller setting. The Imperium is destroyed; humanity has balkanized into thousands of tiny kingdoms and its a dark age for all.
Traveller
MegaTraveller
Traveller New Era
GURPS Traveller
Traveller T20
Traveller - Mongoose Edition

These I am pretty sure about. Wasn't there another one as well?
Is the Mongoose Edition the current version, with the old rules? If not, I know they've been releasing some new edition with the old rules.

OK... here are the editions using proprietary rules (Games Designer Workshop and successor companies):

Traveller (usually called "Classic Traveller") 1977 { CT } GDW

Mega-Traveller (updated and modified CT) 1987 { MT } GDW

Traveller: The New Era (significant re-write of the rules and setting) 1993 { TNE } GDW

Marc Miller's Traveller (another complete re-write of the rules) 1996 { T4 } Imperium Games

Mongoose Traveller (yet another complete re-write... this time reverting to a near-clone of CT) 2008 { MGT } Mongoose
[some of us use RTT (Rikki-Tikki-Traveller)]

Traveller5 (still another complete re-write, not related to MGT, but by Marc Miller) 2009 { T5 } Far Future Enterprises
[beta version, updates have been made available]

Editions using other, pre-existing rule-sets:

GURPS Traveller (used the 3rd edition of the GURPS rules, later material uses 4th ed. rules) 1998, 2006 { GT } Steve Jackson Games

Traveller 20 (used OGL/SRD D20 system rules) 2002 { T20 } QLI/RPGRealms Publishing (QuikLink Interactive)

Traveller Hero (used the 5th edition HERO rules) 2007 { HT } Comstar Games

The publishing licenses for T20 & HT have expired and were not renewed.

The publishing license for GT runs through the end of 2011, and renewal is dependent on the approval of Marc Miller.

Unrelated game bearing a related name:

Traveller 2300 (used a variant of the 2nd edition Twilight 2000 rule-set and is set in a completely different universe/alternate reality from Traveller) 1986, 1988 { T2300, 2300AD } GDW
[renamed 2300AD for the 2nd edition]

2320AD (2300AD setting for T20 rule-set) 2007 {2320AD} QLI

Mongoose is planning a 2300AD release using MGT rules.

Just a note: T5 is fully available (started shipping in April 2013), both in PDF and in a giant "all-in-one" hardbound rulebook of some 600 pages.

Which is my favorite, Havard? Why Classic (CT) Traveller, of course! ;)

I have the most books for it, although I bought the core 3 books for MegaTraveller in the 80's when it first came out. I didn't care for the revamped system OR the changes to the Traveller Universe at all, but I do still find the MT books to be excellent resources for my CT game.

Likewise, I picked up some New Era supplements that I also find to be excellent resources for my CT game. I didn't notice any TNE mechanics, so I don't know anything about the rules.

I've seen some free MGT parts & pieces, which seem okay, but why should I buy a new set of rules if it clones CT, and I already have everything I need in CT?

I also picked up GURPS Traveller for a very low price. I also picked up other GURPS books that complement G:Traveller very well, like G:Space and G:Mars. With these GURPS books, I could do a lot with my CT game if I wanted to.

Is it worth mentioning that T4 included a "Pocket Empires" game with rules for playing systems rather than characters? More of a wargame (and I thought it probably ideal for play-by-post) but it was a nice addition to the family in a version of the system which was, sadly, somewhat of a mess.

I'd say it is definitely worth mentioning! Are there other similar mini games published through the editions of Traveller? Perhaps I could make a separate heading listing those in the OP as well?

There are some war games that are part of the Traveller universe. The ones I know of that are pretty much just pure rule sets (as opposed to something like Azhanti High Lightning that's oriented toward a specific event) are:

Snapshot: tactical grid-based combat for Classic Traveller boarding actions
Mayday: tactical space combat for Classic Traveller
Striker: miniatures combat for Classic Traveller
Brilliant Lances: tactical space combat for New Era
Battle Rider: squadron/fleet combat for New Era
Striker II: miniatures combat for New Era

Striker is focused on larger-scale "armored combat" - has extensive rules for creating armored vehicles (grav & tracked/wheeled/air cushion), artillery pieces, aircraft, etc.
Has rules for heavy weapons (plasma cannon, large cannon, etc - to include nuke-launching artillery) through individual-vehicle-level equipment.
Most of the rules cover unit combat, both individual vehicles and groups of them.
Includes individual personnel in rules, but mostly in terms of small combat units (fire teams, etc) rather than as true individuals. Leaves equipping them etc mostly to other CT rule sets.
