Stonefast: Fully stocked and ready to run!

Post by odinist » Fri May 04, 2012 3:46 pm

Since my group is starting a Thunder Rift campaign with Escape From Zanzer's Dungeon this weekend, I figured the logical next step would be having the party explore the lost dwarven outpost, Stonefast, which is located underneath Zanzer's dungeon.

If anyone would like to read through it, here's my fully stocked Stonefast.

It's for 5-8 PCs, levels 1-2. It's set between Kleine and Hearth-Home, at the eastern border for the Farolas Hills.

Enjoy!

Awesome!

4Shared is a little annoying. I will download it and look through it later. Expect more comments then!

BTW: Welcome to the Piazza Odinist! :)

Outstanding! I got started with D&D back in 1993 using a Rules Cyclopedia and the "Black Zanzer Tem" boxed set. This really makes me smile. Thank you for posting it!

One larger-theme thought: Would anyone else think it might make a good long-term campaign arc to have Kamro beg for mercy close to his demise and, if the party spares his life, have them be visited Kamro's father, an elder white dragon who thanks them them promises them the friendship of his dragon tribe for the rest of their days? Which could then be a means, years down the road, of providing the heroes with a way to get into the Hollow World through the polar openings but without having to do the whole trek on foot?

Looks like I have to have a 4Shared account to download. When did that start happening?
Would love to look at your Stonefast stuff.
Don't really want a 4Shared account though.

Great stuff, odinist! I bought the Big Black Box ages ago, but never took the time to flesh out Stonefast -- the party I ran through Zanzer's dungeon were too keen on chasing the hobgoblin jailor, who'd escaped with Adele over his shoulder.

And welcome to the Piazza!

Ouch. I just noticed that.

Any way you can host it somewhere else Odinist? :)

Oh lame, I didn't realize 4Shared made you create an account now.

I just threw it on MediaFire. Try this link instead.

Much better. Thanks! :)

I downloaded it now and I enjoyed reading through it. Very well done! On my map I placed the dungeon a little farther north. I could see that your location makes sense too, but dont you think it is too close to the road? This would certainly create problems for trade between Hearth-Home and Kleine, which in itself could be interesting, but dont you think that the two towns would have gotten together and cleared out the dungeon by now? Or found an alternate route for the Caravan?

What about Kamro. Does he have any goals besides hanging out in this dungeon? Does he have any kind of relationship with Zanzer Tem?

Note that none of these questions are intended as criticism. I think you have done a great job with this document! :)

Thank you! It's great to get some feedback.

Stonefast would have been a trading outpost, so it makes sense that it would have been close to the caravan route. It hadn't been found by now, because the dwarfs sealed it off before they left. I figure dwarfs would probably be great at making that stonework look natural, so as to hide its location.

As long as the party clears it, there shouldn't be any issues arise for trading, in fact, now that it's been cleared out, I could see the dwarfs re-inhabiting the place to strengthen trade again.

As for Kamro's goals... he'll be dead, so they don't matter. ;-)

Hi odinist, and welcome to the Piazza.

I've downloaded and read over your version of the Stonefast adventure; and I must say that it is quite good, especially for a low-level dungeon crawl. The only major issue I have with it so far is the presence of Orcs and Kobolds (intelligent creatures, though some would debate this).

When I first stocked my dungeon I stuck to the parameters - "pick unintelligent monsters". I always thought this was a good fit, especially considering that the dungeon has been sealed for years (most likely decades or centuries). I also liked the idea of the PCs encountering unintelligent, and non-humanoid monsters after dealing with Zanzer and his goblinoid cohorts. Now, however, after seeing your placement of the dungeon; and considering the fact that the Farolas Hills are supposed to be overrun with Orcs; and considering that Kamro just barged his big white tail into Stonefast without being gentle with the door; I can kind of see somewhat of a new presence of Orcs in the dungeon. Considering that the Orcs may be almost as new to the environment as the PCs, I think it would be a great idea if you stocked some of your more "empty" rooms with recently deceased Orcs who fell victim to traps and non-human beasties (traps and pests are non-biased you know  ).

I particularly enjoyed the Dwarven brothel. If this was a trading outpost, it would most definitely have proprietors of the world's oldest profession. I'm not quite sure why I never thought of that. I also added a few "flavor" rooms to my dungeon, complete with appropriate encounters. For instance - an herbalist lab/storeroom which has become the lair of a yellow mold (it has eaten all the soft organics over time, and now covers most of the room). I also added a "special" wandering monster - the dreaded gelatinous cube. It glides, near silently through the main hallways, keeping them relatively (and suspiciously) clear of debris. Considering the dungeon is pitch black, and the PCs are navigating by dim torchlight, it will surprise the party about 85% of the time. Imagine the horror when the PCs realize that the shimmering in front of them has nothing to do with the heat from their torch, but is actually the awful cthonian aberration bearing down upon them; or the sheer dread if the same creature were to slip up behind them. Throw a few partially digested Orcs in for extra flavor.

Yes, I am a very hated DM; but I believe in making my PCs earn those magic items, and I like to have fun while playing too.

I plan on running this with my new campaign very soon (and I was wracking my brain on where I picked this up! Good thing I came back here and was reminded!). I enjoyed the layout you did and the monsters. The dragon, while a potential TPK monster, isn't so over powerful that low-level PC's can't deal with it. I might cut back on the magic weapons a bit myself (just 'cause I don't like the PC's to start hording them. By 3rd or 4th level, everyone will be lucky if they have a single +1 weapon)

*Raise Dead Topic* I really enjoyed Odinist's stocked Stonefast & so I've decided to toss in a further expansion. Be forewarned: this is still underdevelopment using WordPad, so it won't match the usual 2 column layout most people use. Also, I'm only planning to post this little teaser. Once the full adventure is done, I'll post it in a pdf format for folks to test out and give feedback on. So w/o further ado:

History:
Centuries ago when Stonefast was abandoned during the Orc Wars, the lowest levels were sealed on the orders of the Lord of Hearth-Home and all Dwarves & Gnomes were believed to have been evacuated. That belief was WRONG! While the true numbers will never be known, somewhere between 250-500 Dwarves & 300-400 Gnomes were reported missing & presumed to have died during the evacuation.
During the time of Lord Gargin the Mad, a secret operation was undertaken to rediscover & reclaim Stonefast...that operation was a LIE! Secret writings found centuries later in Gargin's secret library spelled out the truth. In an attempt to get rid of any opposistion to his reign, and to be rid of the Gnome leadership, Gargin tricked the Gnome King, leaders of the Gnome Priesthood & Gargin's Dwarven opposistion leaders, into entering Stonefast's lower levels to "supposedly" reclaim lost & forgotten relics of great power. One of Gargin's most loyal Generals provided escort for the group, listed as a couple hundred total, and used an ancient medallion to grant them access to the lower levels. Once the last of them were down, he resealed the route & returned to report to Gargin, who immediately slew him to keep the deed a scret.
Unbeknownst to anyone, the Dwarves & Gnomes, sealed w/in during the Orc Wars, still lived...after a fashion. Over the centuries of imprisonment, many died & rose as various forms of Undead. Those who survived, degenerated into oppurtunistic scavengers...living Ghouls that fed on any flesh they could get their claws on.
When the Gnome King & his companions descended into the lower levels, they came under attack by the creatures living there. While they managed to barely clear out an area for themselves, they were never able to escape & so settled into a semblance of life. Between repelling incursions from undead, monsters and the degenerates; the new dwellers have continued the mining operations that Stonefast was orignally built to protect.
The Gnomes are currently led by the great-great-great-granddaughter of the Gnome King. The Gnomish Priesthood is led by her twin brother. The Dwarves are currently led by the great-great-grandson of Gargin's youngest son, and most outspoken critic at the time, who is also the leader of the Dwarven Church.

Okay, I lied. Teaser #2: The Dwarven/Gnomish Hold of Delversfast. (No, it's not been fleshed out yet.)

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gQxyI ... NoF4vTv1v7

Enjoy....I'm sure I'll update the map and toss out more teasers as the adventure progresses. Oh and it's 10' per square.

Teaser Alert: So far I've roughly completed Levels 2-5 below Stonefast and the pdf is registering 31 pages, w/ maps. Some parts may be more fleshed out than others; but, it gives DM's wiggle room.

Teaser Alert: Working on the final map (2nd half of Level 7). The pdf is now reading at 35 pages w/ maps. Still not fully fleshed out like most adventures might be; but, that's to leave individual DM's wiggle room.

and finally I present Floors 2-7 below Stonefast:

It was intentionally done the way it is so DM's can modify it to fit their needs.
